Volleyball Earns Sweep over Mohawk Valley

Hudson Valley Community College women's volleyball (2-1) earned a hard fought 3-0 win at home against Mohawk Valley on Wednesday evening in the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College. 

The first match was a nail biter, as the Hawks and Vikings had to play a few extra points with the Vikings ultimately pulling out the 29-27 win in the opening set. Hudson Valley closed out the win by winning the second set 255-19 and the final set 25-20. 

The Vikings had three individuals hit the ball very well tonight. Led by sophomores Katrina Vrooman and Madison DeMarco, the Vikings finished with 30 kills on 77 total attempts. Vrooman and DeMarco each finished with six kills and hit .400 and .556 respectively. Omokhele Itebe also had a good showing offensively for Hudson Valley. Iteb hit .417 with five kills and zero hitting errors on 12 attempts.

Defensively, the Vikings were led by Vrooman's three blocks, while Jacqueline McCormick added two blocks of her own in her three sets of action. 

As a team, Hudson Valley earned 13 service aces, which were evenly distributed amongst the team. DeMarco, Andraya Warner-Davis and Leureah Cummings each finished with three service aces. 

Freshman Victoria Kendrick led the team with 19 assists in her first collegiate match of her career. 

The Vikings volleyball team is back in action this Sunday, Sept. 15 for their annual Hudson Valley Pod. The Vikings are scheduled to begin play at 9 a.m. against Finger Lakes. Over the course of the day, Hudson Valley will play Finger Lakes, Monroe and Genesee.
