Volleyball Defeats Corning 3-1 in Pod Tournament

The Hudson Valley Community College women's volleyball team played well at the Adirondack pod and nearly pulled out a couple of wins but fell just shy of defeating Tompkins Cortland. The Vikings finished the day with a 1-2 record after defeating Corning 3-1 in the final match of the day.

Vikings (1-8) vs. Broome

The Vikings dropped their first match of the day to Broomein straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-11). Hudson Valley combinedfor 24 kills and 27 digs and 22 assists with five service aces in the three-game match. 

Madison DeMarco (Schenectady/Mohonasen) led the Vikings with eight kills and added five digs while Kirstin Wood (Colonie/Colonie) finished with a team high 11 digs and added five kills. Leureah Cummings (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Shayla Pfendler (Ava/Adirondack) combined for all 22 assists as Cummings finished with 11 assists and Pfendler added 10 assists.

Vikings (1-9) vs. Tompkins Cortland 

The Vikings were defeated by Tompkins Cortland in four sets 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23). The Vikings combined for 47 kills, 42 assists and 61 digs in the second match of the day. 

Jessica Getty (Hartford/Hartford) had a tremendous day for the Vikings after hitting .619 with 15 kills in 21 attempts. Getty also added three digs and four solo blocks. 

Wood and Laura Grippin (Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) combined for 35 of the Vikings 61 digs with Wood recording 18 and Grippin added 17 digs. Pfendler led the Vikings with 23 assists in the four-set match. 

Vikings (2-9) vs. Corning

In the final match of the day, the Vikings earned a hard-fought win by defeating Corning in four sets 3-1(25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18). The Vikings combined for 40 kills, 31 assists, 27 service aces and 45digs.  

Getty and Wood continued to hit the ball well as they led the Vikings in the attack. Getty finished with 13 kills and hit .320, while Wood recorded 10 kills and hit .333. Pfendler added 22 assists, three service aces and three digs in the four-game set.

Volleyball finished the day with a 1-2 record and returns to action on Monday, September 24 when they play Adirondack at 6 p.m. in the McDonough Sports Complex.
