The Hudson Valley Community College women's volleyball team claimed their first win of the 2018 season after defeating Niagara in the final match of the Niagara pod tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Vikings (0-5) vs. Erie
The Vikings dropped their first match of the day to Eriein straight sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-20). Hudson Valley combined for 20 kills and 39 digs with 21 hitting errors in the three-game match.
Kirstin Wood (Colonie/Colonie) led the Vikings with seven kills and added 13 digs while Laura Grippin (Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) finished the match with a team high 14 digs. Jessica Getty (Hartford/Hartford) finished with five kills and three solo blocks.
Vikings (0-6) vs. #10Jamestown
The Vikings were defeated by #10 ranked Jamestown in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13). The Vikings combined for 23 kills, 14 assists and 20 digs in the second match of the day.
Wood continued to hit the ball well as she finished with a team high 12 kills with a .435 hitting percentage on 23 attempts. Grippin led the Vikings with 8 digs and added a service ace against one of the top teams in the nation. Shayla Pfendler (Ava/Adirondack) finished the match with a team high 11 assists.
Vikings (1-6) vs. Niagara
In the final match of the day, the Vikings earned a hard-fought win for their first match victory of the season, defeating Niagara in five sets 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 15-7). The Vikings combined for a season high 43 kills, 38 assists, 30 service aces and 38 digs.
Wood finished the day with a career match as she led the Vikings with 12 kills, 10 service aces and 16 digs to lead Hudson Valley to its first win of the season
Getty added nine kills, six service aces and three solo blocks. Madison Demarco (Schenectady/Mohonasen) recorded seven kills and seven digs to go with her four service aces. Hannah Venditti (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) had five kills with a .400 hitting percentage.
Volleyball finished the day with a 1-2 record and will return for action on Wednesday, September 19 when they travel to play Adirondack at 7 p.m.
