Track and Field Continues to Gear Up for Nationals with Albany Meet

The men's and women's track and field program continued its success as they competed in the UAlbany Spring Classic hosted by SUNY Albany in Albany, NY on Saturday, April 23, 2022.
Once again the nation's top sprinter, Charles Benichoux, proved to be a force amongst the four-year programs as he won the 100m dash for the fifth week in a row. He has continued to improve on his 100m time, finishing today's meet with an official time of 10.67 seconds. Benichoux placed third in the 200m with a time of 21.97, which was his best 200m time of the season. Benichoux continues to edge closer to the Vikings all-time record in both the 100m and the 200m events.
Unique Henderson performed well in the men's 400m as he placed sixth overall but also improved on his time from last week, finishing with a time of 52.67 in the event.
The men's program had four individuals earn top-8 finishes in the men's 1,500m event as they were led by Shazim Permaul, who placed third overall in the event with a time of 4:26.20. He was followed by Trevor Dzikowicz (5th) and Vinny Levchenko (6th), while Garrick Smith-Growick placed eighth with a time of 4:37.98.
On the men's throwing events, Martin Bond participated in three events, the men's Javelin, the men's Hammer Throw and the Men's Discus. Bond placed third in the Javelin Throw with a throw of 43.45m, improving upon his throw of 39.27m last week. He placed fourth in the Hammer Throw with a distance of 37.69m and fourth in the Discus Throw with a distance of 38.32m.
The men's Shot Put had three Vikings finish in the top-8 of the event and was led by Guerin Dupuis, who posted a final distance of 11.47m and finished in fifth place. Aiden Alaxanian placed sixth with a throw of 10.09m. While Robert Fitzgerald placed seventh with a distance of 9.70m.
Daniel Honsinger had a good day in the jump events as he participated in the men's Long Jump and the men's Triple Jump. His best jump was in the triple, which he posted an official distance of 11.66m and placed third overall. He also posted a seventh-place finish in the Long Jump with a distance of 6.17m.
On the women's side, Lia Soares earned a pair of top-8 finishes in the sprint events. She finished sixth overall in the women's 100m dash with a time of 13.39 and she placed eighth overall in the women's 200m dash and posted an official time of 27.40.
Olivia Skylstad competed in the women's 400m hurdles event on Saturday and performed well with a second-place finish. She posted an official time of 1:14.64. In the women's 5000m event, the Vikings had two post top-5 scores with Eva Sgambettera leading the way with a fourth-place finish and a time of 22:38.25. Hickory Whalen finished fifth overall with a time of 23:19.72.
In the throwing events, Isabella Guyer posted a pair of top-8 finishes in the women's Hammer Throw as she finished seventh overall and recorded a final score of 19.42m and the Women's Shot Put, a fifth-place finish with a distance of 6.55m. She also placed 11th overall in the Discus with a distance of 17.05m.
Alyssa Bruno also earned a pair of top-8 scores in the jumping events. She finished fifth overall in the women's High Jump (1.37m) and placed sixth overall in the Javelin Throw (22.59m).
