Men's Lacrosse Advances to Championship Weekend

Hudson Valley Community College men's lacrosse (9-4) reached the NJCAA Region 3 Championship weekend after defeating Tompkins Cortland 12-8 on Wednesday evening at the Vikings Outdoor Athletic Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. 

The Vikings were led by attacker John Lawlor's (Colonie/Colonie) six points as he finished the game with five goals and one assist. Lawlor started the Vikings scoring with the first goal of the opening quarter with 13:44 remaining. Hudson Valley took a 5-3 lead into the halftime break. 

As the Panthers continued to creep closer to Hudson Valley and trailed 8-7 at the end of the third quarter, Lawlor took control in the fourth to score three of the final four goals for the Vikings, keeping Tompkins Cortland at bay and secured Hudson Valley's first appearance in the Region 3 Championship weekend for the first time since 2012.

Nathan Bruce (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) and Austin Hinderliter (Ephratah/Johnstown) each scored two goals, while Bruce added a pair of assists. 

Nicholas Malatesta (North Greenbush/Averill Park), Darren Nagy (Saugerties/Saugerties) and Corbin Lafleur (East Greenbush/LaSalle Institute)also recorded a goal in tonight's win and Malatesta led the Vikings with a game-high four assists.

The Vikings men's lacrosse program will prepare for their next matchup against Genesee this Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. The NJCAA Region 3 Championship weekend will be held at No. 1 seeded Onondaga in Syracuse, NY.
