Lacrosse Outlasts Herkimer for Third Straight Win

Hudson Valley Community College men's lacrosse (5-3) pulled away late to win their third straight game after defeating Herkimer 13-7 on Wednesday afternoon at the Outdoor Athletic Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley in Troy, NY. 

The Vikings trio of Nathan Bruce (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville), John Lawlor (Colonie/Colonie) and Nicholas Malatesta (North Greenbush/ Averill Park) combined for 13 points on eight goals and five assists. The Vikings first seven goals of the game were either scored or assisted by the Vikings trio. 

Herkimer tied the game up at 4-4 with a goal at the 13:42 mark in the third quarter. Hudson Valley answered and used a 5-0 run to close out the quarter with a 9-4 advantage. Darren Nagy (Saugerties/Saugerties) fought hard all game, drawing four penalties on the Generals, but was unable to connect for any points until he finally broke through in the fourth quarter. Nagy two of the Vikings final four goals of the game to help secure the win. 

Austin Hinderliter (Ephratah/Johnstown) also scored twice for Hudson Valley, both coming in the second half of the game. 

Austin Mendel (Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) continued to play well defensively as he recorded a team-high three caused turnovers and added 16 ground balls. Mendel played a huge role in gaining possession for Hudson Valley as he won 13 of his 20 face-off attempts. 

The Vikings men's lacrosse program is scheduled to hit the road next Wednesday, April 10 as they travel to play Mohawk Valley at 6 p.m.
