Men's Lacrosse Dominates in Season Opener

Hudson Valley Community College men's lacrosse (1-0) team opened up the 2018 season in dominating fashion as the Vikings defeated Northern Virginia Community College 30-2 on Sunday afternoon in Herndon, Va.

Sophomore Aaron Thorpe (Malta/Ballston Spa) had a monster game for the Vikings as he finished with career-highs in both goals and assists. Thorpe finished with eight goals, six assists for a personal best 14 points. Hudson Valley entered halftime with a 20-0 lead and Thorpe had scored or assisted on eight first half goals.

Lateke Murray (Albany/Albany) also had a career game as he finished with six goals and three assists on 11 shots with seven shots on goal.

Led by Thorpe and Murray, the Vikings had six student-athletes record multi-goal games. Darren Nagy (Saugerties/Saugerties) recorded three goals and added one assist. Mark Calicchia (Loudonville/Shaker) tallied three goals, including the Vikings first goal of the 2018 season. Nathan Bruce (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) finished with four goals on seven shots and added 11 ground balls as the Vikings top midfielder today. Jose Gomez (Slingerlands/Bethlehem) also scored four goals on 11 shots, with five on goal.

As a team, the Vikings were a perfect 12-for-12 in clear attempts and won 31-of-36 face offs. Hudson Valley's offense tallied 69 shots and collected 57 total ground balls.

Trevor Ham (Kingston/Kingston) started in goal for the Vikings and did not allow a goal in 30 minutes of action. Ham only faced two shots and saved them both in the first half. Dan McClintock (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) replaced Ham in the second half as the Vikings held a 20 goal advantage over Northern Virginia. McClintock allowed a pair of goals and saved five shots in 30 minutes of play.

The Vikings are back in action tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 26 as they travel to play Potomac State College of West Virginia at 2 p.m. Hudson Valley's first home game is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 14 at 4 p.m. on the Vikings Turf Field.
