Sophomore forward Derick Faragon (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) finished with 24 points and five steals to lead the Hudson Valley Community College (1-0) men's basketball team to an 85-82 win over Broome Community College (0-1) in the opening round of the Viking Club Invitational this evening in Troy.
Faragon, who netted 16 of his points in the second half, hit 12-of-15 free throws from the line, including a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining that sealed the game for the Vikings.
Sophomore All-American guard Justin Gallo (Brunswick/Lansingburgh High School) finished with 21 points for the Vikings. Sophomore guard Emanuel Mayben (Troy/Troy High School) added 16 points and nine assists and sophomore forward Datwan Hemingway (Albany/Christian Brother's Academy) contributed 15 points and 16 rebounds.
Broome received 23 points apiece from sophomore Rob Krowiak (Endicott/Maine-Endwell High School) and freshman Zach Huston (Binghamton/Binghamton High School).
Hudson Valley will advance to meet Schenectady Country Community College in the championship game at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
