Sophomore forward Markael Brace (Albany/Albany High School) poured in a school-record 39 points to lead the Hudson Valley Community College (6-4) men's basketball team to a 98-69 win over Broome Community College earlier today at the McDonough Complex in Troy.
Brace's scoring total surpassed the previous school record of 37 points set by Joseph Bell against Columbia-Greene Community College a year ago. Through 10 games this season, Brace is averaging 24.0 points per game.
Hudson Valley never trailed during the game, jumping out to a 24-9 lead during the first eight minutes of the contest. Brace netted 26 of his points in the first half as Hudson Valley took a 47-29 advantage into the break.
Broome (7-3) cut its deficit to 14 points, 61-47, with 14:29 remaining in the game, but Brace scored nine points in an 11-2 Hudson Valley run that put away the visiting Hornets for good.
Freshman forward Allan Dickson (Troy/Troy High School) had 17 points and a career-high seven blocks for Hudson Valley while freshman guard Josh Wysocki (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls High school) contributed 11 points. Freshman guard Steven Smith (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahan High School) dished out 12 assists and came away with five steals.
Anthony McRae (Linden, NJ/Bayley Ellard) had 24 points to pace Broome, who had won four straight games coming into today.
Hudson Valley returns to action on Monday, January 13 when it hosts Adirondack Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
