The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team has now won six straight games and 13 of their last 14 after sweeping Cayuga on the road on Tuesday afternoon at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex in Cortland, NY.
Game One: Hudson Valley 14, Cayuga 4 (5 innings)
The Vikings scored 10 runs in the final two frames to defeat Cayuga in five innings, which was highlighted by a grand slam by Nick Thomas in the fourth and a three-run home run in the fifth by Vicente Mendoza.
Cayuga's James Roeschlaub singled in a run in the bottom of the third inning to pull the Spartans within a run and trailed the Vikings 4-3. The Vikings responded in the fourth when Thomas smacked his one-out grand slam to open up an 8-2 lead and capped off a 2-for-3 day.
Mendoza finished the scoring for Hudson Valley hitting his three-run shot in the fifth inning. Mendoza went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Derrick Miller and Ben Grant each collected a pair of hits to add to a 14-hit attack.
Kyle Lambert weaved in and out of trouble early in the game but finished strong to hurl a five-inning complete game while striking out nine and allowed five hits and three earned runs.
Game Two: Hudson Valley 17, Cayuga 1
In the second game, the Vikings held a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning before pulling away to complete the sweep of Cayuga.
Over the final two innings, Hudson Valley broke open the game by scoring 12 runs sparked by two-run homers by Riley Nagle, Thomas and Jackson Wenstrom.
Chris Kordziel, who went 4-for-5 in the game, hit a key two-run double late in the game to help back a six inning, six strikeout performance by lefthander Carson Stewart. Stewart pitched a gem of a game for his third win of the season. On top of his six strikeouts, he allowed only one run on two hits with five walks.
As a team, Hudson Valley recorded 16 hits in 38 at-bats with 15 RBI and saw 12 different players record at least one hit in the game.
Hudson Valley will now host Cayuga this Thursday, April 18 at Joe Bruno Stadium on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
