The Hudson Valley Community College (24-15/14-4 Region III) baseball team swept a doubleheader from Fulton-Montgomery Community College (4-24-1/3-15-1 Region III) earlier today in Troy. Hudson Valley won the opener, 22-4, and the second game, 16-6.
Hudson Valley pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of 12 walks in the opener. Sophomore Ben Bushey (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls High School) was three-for-three with three RBI at the plate. Freshman Brett Weber (East Schodack/Columbia High School) also drove in three runs and freshman Nate Novak (Hudson/Hudson High School) was two-for-three with a double and two RBI.
Novak was two-for-two with a home run and four RBI to lead Hudson Valley back from a six-run deficit in the second game. Freshman Chris Spenello (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Catholic High School) had two hits and three RBI and sophomore Tom Zink (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) and freshman Mike Hart (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) chipped in three hits apiece for the Vikings.
Freshman hurler Casey Avery (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa High School) entered the game in the first inning and pitched six shutout innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Vikings. He struck out four and walked one while only allowing two hits.
